Night brushing

Twice daily brushing with a fluoride toothpaste has been actively supported by the dental professional since it plays a crucial role in the prevention and control of caries and periodontal disease. Caries poses a potential threat throughout the lifetime of an individual. Similarily gingivitis and periodontal disease is no longer restricted to adults , children are increasingly being affected by it .
Twice brushing and caries . Clinical evidence, professional tooth cleaning programmes and studies on self performed oral hygiene and dental caries indicates that efficient oral hygiene with proper twice brushing regimen with a flouridated tooth paste is caries preventative.
Brushing at night and gum health: In vivo studies demonstrate that brushing ( at night ) can remove upto 10 times more plaque than rinsing at night. Simultaneously, it was shown that not brushing at night could lead to 100% more bacteria in the mouth . Plaque- gingivitis clinical studies demonstrate that twice brushers had a downward trend in gingivitis compared to once brushers.
WHEN TO BRUSH : Apart from morning brushing , recent eveidence supports brushing with a flouride toothpaste just prior to going to sleep at night; flouride concentrations 12 hours after brushing last thing at night were comparable to those found 1-4 hrs after brushing in the morning. In other words , higher protective flouride levels are retained in the mouth for longer period of time during the night, compared to the day.
CONCLUSION : There is a overwhelming evidence that brushing twice a day with a good flouridated toothpaste is imperative for overall good oral health including caries prevention and gum health.
